. Death by Drowning.— lt is expected that tKe inquea ton the body of the boy Brooks, who was dr*wned m tbe Wairan Valley near Bnckman'a, on Monday last, will take place to-day. It would appear that the mishap was caused by the cart suddenly disappearing m a quicksand, which is known to exiat at the spot. In addition to the sad loss of human life Mr Ockley's beat horse was drowned. Some eight years ago, it may be remembered, another lad m the employ of Mr Ockley lost his life under somewhat similar circumstances.

The Late Accident. — We found on inquiry at the Hospital this afternoon that Mr Donaldson 'B condition has slightly ameliorated during the past 24 hours, though up to the present Dr Cleghome has been unable to ascertain the exact extent of his injuries. From Mr Donaldson's own statement it appears that he was exercising a draught horse on Monday evening, and was indulging m a smart canter on the road between Mr March's' hotel and Mr L. Dodson's, house, when tbe animal stumbled, throwing ita rider heavily on to tbe ground, and rolling over him. When Mr Donaldson recovered consciousness he tried to cooey out, but his efforts m this direction proving ineffectual m procuring assistance, be tried to drag himself from the middle of the road where he lay, to the fence on the side of the road. With the injuries he had sustained, combined with numbness consequent on the severe frost during the night,' this operation was necessarily very painful and slow, and w»s not accomplished until daybreak, shortly after which he was seen by the poundkeeper, Sydney Jack. Great sympathy is everywhere expressed with Mr Donaldson m his misfortune, but we trust that m a few days we shall be able to report his rapid progress towards convaleaence.

As Mr Mr Hutcheson had stated m his letter that it wa« his intention to be m Blenheim m the coarse of a few daya it waa decided to let the consideration of all three documents stand over for a month. Meanwhile sUps are being taken to light some of the worst parts of tbe town by kerosene and a tender of Mr VV. No PosTPOspiENT.— At the end of a funeral notice published m an Indiana paper appears : ' N.B.— This funeral not to be post' poned on account of bad weather.'

The Rival Scuxlkks.— White and Hearn, the rival sen Hera, says a Wellington paper, are attracting considerable attention just now amongst the boating and sporting men. They are both m active training and m fine form. The majority of the public seem to like Hearn's style best, but the visitor hag a fair share of admirers who are ready to back their opinion. The general impression is that the race will be a vary evenly contested one, and that whoever wins will have to work for it. White is staying at the Pier Hotel, and is paying strict attention to his diet, as well as to nis exercises afloat and ashore. He is a very quiet man, and is scarcely ever heard to talk on the object of his visit or his capabilities as an oarsman, but he has nevertheless fully made up his mind to take the championship to Auckland.

How it is Done I—The1 — The London correspondent of the " Manchester Guardian " learns that one of the means by which many hundreds of copies of revolutionary proclamations and paperi printed m London have been conveyed for distribution to many parts of the Continent have been by enclosing them m bamboo canes. By this means it is said that the Nihilists ani Socialists m all the great cities of Europe have been apprised of whatever their leaders may have deemed it neceisary to inform them. ;
