The request being approved of, Mr Hodson appeared, and said that he desired to draw the attention of the Council to the great quantity of gorse growing in the Taylor River bed, and that, though the 'gorse was at present outside the Borough boundaries, if it were allowed to go on ncreasing, the centre of the river bed would be filled up, and it would then be impossible to say what new channel the Taylor River would take. He thought that the gorse could be got rid of now at a small cost, whereas in a year’s time it would cost ten times as much, and in two years’ time, if neglected, it would bo quite an undertaking. In support of his statements Mr Hodson instanced the case of the Omaka River bed, which had been neglected when the gorse first appeared in it, and which it would cost thousands of pounds to clear.
