Government have received reliable information from Waimate that there is no prospect of any breach of the peace, and that the natives express their willingness to allow the survey to proceed in a few days. The Nelson Commission on Higher Education having written to the Nelson College Governor expressing a desire to send three of its members to visit the College and observe its working, received the following reply:—“The Governor having been advised that the Nelson College is not supported by endowments made out of the public estate or grants of public money, is of opinion that he would not be justified in allowing inspection of its working by the Royal Commission. The Governor, together with the Principal, will, however, most readily give the facility to any gentleman taking an interest in University and Higher Education, whether members of the Royal Commission or otherwise, to observe the working of the college.” It has been decided by the Cabinet to appoint a second magistrate to relieve Mr Mansford, R.M. and District Court Judge here, from the present pressure of work.
