A letter was read from Mr John Renfrew stating that some misundersanding existed as to his account for work and labor done at M'Callum's bank, and making aclaim for extras. The Board were of opinion that Mr Renfrew was not entitled to be paid more than he previously claimed, and declined to entertain his application. WORKS AT LKARI'S BREACH. The Chairman stated that he had visited tb» protective works at Leary's Breach, and found them m a satisfactory condition, and the bend at Brindle's was very much improved. He did not apprehend any any danger to the town of and the drivingofthem. About a ton and a half of Blenhem from this quarter on completion of the work. He thought it would be desirable to have separate contracts for the supply of piles wire would also be required. There were various opinions as to the feasibility of the scheme. He was of opinion that it would answer the purpose intended, and that what had been said as the work not being strong enough would was untenable. A very large deposit would be created by it, and it would ultimately turn the river. It would be about the strongest piece of work of the kind m New Zealand. It was resolved on the motion of Mr Parker, seconded by Mr Davies— That separate tenders be called for the delivery at the Rock Ferry of 70 piles of various lengths not less than 25 feet and for the driving of them. Mr Rogers asked if there was going to be any guarantee. He should oppose the motion unless the success of the scheme were guaranteed. He should move as an amendment that separate tenders be called fcr the delivery and driving of 970 piles, &c, "provided the success of the scheme be guaranteed." I Mr Parker said he would second the motion ■pro forma. He felt confident of the success of the scheme, but objected to the work being taken under a guarantee, which would meau taking the work out of the bands of the Board and making it one man's scheme. The amendment was negatived and the motion carried. POWERS OP THE BOARD.
