Nov. 18 A mysterious fire occurred here early on Sunday morning and destroyed a large building the property of Messrs Hooper and Dorlson of Nelson, next to the Westport Times Office. The building destroyed was occupied as the office of the Koranui Coal Go. and also of the Halcyon quartz mining Co. and local agency of the Curator of intestate estates, who had all papers connected with their affairs destroyed. Wm. Lloyd & Cos. Secretary locked up the building at 10. 30, and asserts that all was then safe. No one lives m the building nor had it any fireplace. The building was uninsured. The Fire Brigade and other citizens saved the adjacent buildings.the Westport Times Office, Westport and Colliery Cos. office and Carpenter's fruit store. The latter suffered some loss by the hurried removal of his effects. An enquiry will be held. The Koranui Co. have duplicate plans of their works m the hands of Government. The Reef ton coach met with another exceedingly narrow escape yesterday at the Nine-Mile Creek, when the mountain torrent washed the horses off their legs, swamped the coach, ■ and endangered the passengers' lives. The turning of the first sod of the South Rakaia and Ashburton Railway took place at Rakaia yesterday afternoon with the usual ceremonies. This will be the first private railway constructed under the Act. Its length will be 22 .miles. The contract price is £5,500 per mile. The work will be finished m ten months. Ashburton, Nov. 18. The first show of the Ashburton Agriculturaand Pastoral Association is being held to-day. There are 208 entries, the strength of the exhibition being m sheep, horses, and implements. The latter were particularly excellent, and an opinion prevails that Ashburton should be included m the places to be visited by the proposed peripatetic show. Timaru, Nov. 15. A frightful fatal accident occurred at half-past 11 this morning. The roof blew off a house near Ormsby's flour mill, taking a chimney with it. Through its fall the latter caused instantaneous death to an infant seven months old, and Mrs Drew died about ten minutes after. I Timajru, Nov. 18. There was no fire at Timaru. At Waimat e, 26 miles distant, the bush was on fire as per telegram sent this afternoon. The fire there ia still raging. If we get further particulars will wire ; we are not asleep for Timaru news. On H inquiry at the telegraph office we found the wire down. Only one wire is working between Christchurch and Blenheim. Intelligence reached town at a late hour of a fire m the Waimate Bush, destroying property m timber and mills to a very large amount, and Mr Studholme, the principal owner, estimates his loss at not less than L 60,000. The mills of Messrs Obalds, Hayes, Bruce, Bartlett, Hunt, and Barrett are all destroyed. Several residences were burnt, and many families are destitute. Great anxiety is felt for a number of persons residing near the bush. It is believed that before the fire abates the whole bush will be destroyed. Fifteen families have arrived m the township who have been cleared out of house and home. One man had his leg broken at 1 1. 30 last night. The fire is still raging furiously. Nov. 20. The Busb fire at Waimate was raging again last night and the town is threatened. The insurance losses so far as can be ascertained are Liverpool LlOO, New Zealand L5O, Standard L5O Transatlantic LlOO, Union L 250. Hayes' maiden bush is only little damaged. He started yesterday with a gang of men to erect a new mill. Balcltjtha, Nov. 18. Robert Hogg and John Dunne were nominated to-day for the Mayoralty of Balclutha. Messrs Blair, Usher, and Hay, engineers, accompanied by G. Turnbull and Davey, of Dun. edin, and a party of gentlemen from Balclutha and neighbourhood, sailed round Inchclutha today m the steamer lona. Blair is to report to the Minister of Public Works as to the damage caused to the island by floods. About nineteentwentieths of the island is still covered with water. Dunedin-, Nov. 18. An application under the Habeas Corpus Act will be made to the Judge on his return from Wellington to determine the right to the custody of a child at Port Chalmers. The case is said to be one of a very complicated nature, and the circumstances to be such as to invest it with a great deal of interest. A case, of which the facts are as follows, will con c before the Police Court to-morrow. Three years ago a mother left her infant boy with an acquaintance to be adopted. The woman to whom the custody of the child was entrusted married shortly afterwards, and died recently. The mother of the child then sought to have it restored to her, but deseased's husband objected to give it up. As the only means to regain her child she has now laid a criminal information against the man m whose possession it is. Invercargill, Nov. 19. The Waterworks Committee have decided to recommend the borrowing , of £100,000 for the purpose of bringing m water from the Dunsendel Creek, for the supply of the town. The Mayor will be recommended to call a public meeting, to take the opinion of the Ratepayers on the subject.
