OUR POLICE FORCE

Sir, — It is very seldom that my pen ever ventures to write tor the press, bud now I feel tilat 1 must express my indignation at the manner m which the guardians of the peace have lately behaved. How is it that my noble brass buttoned gentlemen have got so very particular- ? Is it that there being so many of the Police force m Blenheim that they try to make cases m the Court to wile away the time ? This, Mr Editor, appears to me to be the case. Because a person may just jump out of his trap or cart to run into a shop to get a parcel, and befdre he can get back into it again a bobby is there m all his grand uniform and the words that greet your ears are ' ' shure and what's your name ?" Out comes the bobby's pocket book and on the next Court day you are lined ten shillings for leaving your hors.e standing for a minute which Would not run away if you tried to make it. Another case comes under our notice and that is the charge made against the- contractor of the Omaka Bridge. Here is ah instance where just because the light on the bridge b!ew out the bobbies for the want of a case dropped down on the contractor, when the bridge was m ro dangerous state either. Now, Sir, lam told that while Mr Dickens has been repairing that bridge he has had many pounds worth of timber taken away by some evil disposed person. Night after night pieces of timber were stolen and the police were informed of this and they would not exert themselves* to detect the thief. No, they •would have to conceal themselves to do that and stay up all night, a thing I atn sure not one of them do. This is a thing that wants enquiring into; out of the four bobbies not one of them stay up all night. Look at the late robbery cases that hay« occurred at Messrs Girling's store, and yet the bobbies never troubled themselves about them, and never would: Robberies might be committed daily and the police force would never interfere with them. One Saturday night, not very long ago, a woman who was the worse for drink was m front of the Government buildings ; a crowd had collected, and she was using some of the most dreadful and disgusting language I ever heard. I then made the inquiry of'Whefa were the police." The reply I got was "Anywhere but where a row is going on." This reply was I think the truth. Now, Sir, I would like to know what good four policemen can or are doing m a smill town like Blenheim. It appears to me that they are only trying to annoy people instead of taking care of their interests as they should do. While the police do their duty uprightly as they should do it I would always say a good word for them, but when they come forward as they are now doing, making themselves so very officious I think it is time for someone to raise a voice against these lazy good-for-nothing beings. Perhaps my readers will think that because I write this I am one of those that have been entrapped by the bobbies, but I can assure them 1 have not. Trusting that you will find room for (this m your valuable paper, — I am, &c, • . N.B. [The police are only carrying out the law m bringing cases before the Court, and the Magistrates as well as the police are sworn to administer such laws with unflinching justice, How, then, can N.B. call the police "Officious?" If this can be possible, then they must have a power above the law and can please themselves whether they carry out all its requirements, which is an absurdity. The real fact is that from some cause, either ignorance or misunder.standing, there has been a remissness and lcxity m the past which is now changed, and the process is not a pleasant one to everybody. — Ep. M. E.\

Holloway's Ointment and Pills. — Abscesses, Erysipelas, Piles. — Unvarying success attends all who treat these diseases according to the simple printed directions, wrapped round, each pot and box. They are invaluable to the young and timid, whose bushfulness sometimes endangers life. A little attention, moderate perseverence, and trifle expense, will enable the most diffident to conduct any case to a happy issue without exposing secret infirmities io any one. The Ointment arrests the spreading inflamation, restrains the excited vessels, cools the over-heated skin, alleviates throbbing and smarting pains, and gives great ease. These directions also clearly point out when and how Holloway's Pills are to be taken, that their purifying and regulating powers may a, sist liy adjusting and strengthening the constitution.
