THE Marlborough Express.

WEDNESDAY, AUG. 15, 1877.

: " Give me the liberty ta know, to utter, and to argue freely according to conscience, above all other liberties —Miltoh.

Crowded Out. — Our Havelock letter, and by arrangement a letter by Mr Douslin ; also one from Spring Creek. Subscription lists have been opened m Wellington for the sufferers by the wreck of the Queen Bee. .......... . .. Yesterday intelligence was received from White's Bay to the effect that a large whale was cruising about close m shore. John Payne -was brought up on ■ a charge of drunkenness, at the Resident Magistrate's Court, on Saturday, and was- fined 5s and costs, with the usual alternative. . It was rumored m Wellington on Monday that the schooner Cynthia had been . totally wrecked m Guard's Bay, . Port Underwood, however, as she arrived m Picton on Saturday, a contradiction is hardly necessary. Mr Conolly has been retained by the Government for the defence m the Wdkd Maori ■■ libel case. The case comes off for hearing on the 27th instant m Wellington, and may involve some curious disclosures. A. Nelson telegram received on Monday says—" Messrs N. Edwards 'and Co. have received a telegram from Shaw, Savilleand Co;, London, m reply to one announcing the wreck of the Queen Bee, and stating that she was 'not insured." - 1 ' ; :i

A very necessary addition has been made to the Marlborough Police Force m the person of Constable Bailey who . has been sent from the Constabulary Depdt, Wellington. Our views on the question were very freely expressed m a late issue, and we must express our satisfaction at the course adopted by ;the authorities m dealing with the matter at once. The Queen Bee. —The Wellington Post has .the following paragraph :—" It ; is stated, on apparently good authority, that there is every probability of a large portion of the Queen Bee's cargo and of the wreck itself being recovered. in good, order, so that the purchasers are likely to make a good thing of their speculation. The s. a. Napier is bidding fair to become a favorite boat, at least so far as the Wairau is concerned. She left the Ferry at 7 a.in. on Sunday morning, crossed the Bar at B, ' and reached Wellington wharf at 1 '30 p.m. OiT Tuesday moruJDg she left again at 2*20; crossed the Bar at 9*20, having a stiff head wind all the way, and arrived at the wharf at 11 a. m. She left again for Wellington at 9 this morning. .,
