The school theu broke up m general good humor. The following letter sent by Dr Mnller to the Rev. Father SaiUean will ba read with interest by all those concerned m the progress of Education : — "Rev. sir, — In accordance with your request I have again examined the St.- Mary's School, and am happy to state that they still maintain tne opinion I formed of^them afc the last annual examination. The pupils show that tliey have been carefully taught and grounded m the different subjects ; and I judge this from the fact, that n<> pupds m any class stood out pre-eminent, hut there was a general average of intelligence amongst all the children, making it very difficult to adjudge prizes. I remarked, last year, that there was a weakness m Arithmetic, but I am glad t<> say that there is a marked improvement this yenr, the upper class m the girl's school working vulgar fractions fairly. These remarks will also apply to the boy's school, where the "upper class worked vulg.v and decimal fractions ; while one boy. Frederick Adams, not only worknd mensuration of planes, hub even crossed tl'e pon.t asinorum of Eurlid. I departed somewhat from my practice of la-t year m giving to the upp-r classes m both schools (m addition ti> v'wd voco examination) a series of papers m ArithmericjGrammar, History, Geography, Composition. Dicta'iou, and Writing. For tbe best answers on the whole of these questions. I.offerecl a prize m each suhonl. The answers were, written m the schools under the supervision of the teachers, and occupied the pupils from nine o'clock m th« moruiii./ until 7 o'clock ir. the evening, and I was much pleased with the intelligence shown m them. The' pr>z'! m the Girls' School fell t<. Flora Wil'ia ns, an I m the Boys' S':h"ol to Frederick Ala - ns. In conclusion, I would sta'e that ifre.-it praise is duo to the ti-a'-hers, Mrs Girriek and Mr Ward, for the care ami attention they have paid to t heir pupils, as evidenced '■>* the prnare.ss thoy h,ivo m-x le. — 1 am. Rev. Sir, your obedient .servant, S. L. Mulmsr. "Tlie Rev. A. M. J. Smzoau, Blenheim."
