Christchurch, May 29. Mr Harper has given notice of a motion m the Provincial Council, affirming the desirability of considering resolutions with regard to the tenure of pasturage leases which expire m 1880. The Lyttelton Times condemns the motion, on the ground that it is undesirable to discuss such a grave question at the close of a session m which there has been a recent change of Government, and also because the Government has not yet expressed any opinion m the matter.
Encouraged by the premium offered by the Acclimatisation Society, people are destroying hawks wholesale ; over 600 have been shot m three weeks.
In the Provincial Council last night, a motion for sending home an immigration agent for the province was withdrawn, at the request of the Prokincial Secretary, who said that the Government were of opinion that immigration as now carried on by the General Government was satisfactory.
Dunedin, May 31. The bailiff's room m the Resident ' Magistrate's Court was broken into between Saturday night and this morning, and £130 stolen from the press. The burglars must have obtained ingress by means of a window facing Water-street, which was left unlocked.
