Gotch, of Papakura, of the cost of cultivating au acre of tobacco : Forming and sowing seed beds, £1 10s ; two plonghings and harrowings ? £2 ; manure, £3 10s ; forming furrows for hillocks, 10s ; forming hillocks with hand hoe, <£1 4s ; transplanting, £2 10s ; three scarifying, £1 2s 6d ; grubbing, general work, and attending plants till ripe (man's labor), £6 ; boy for gathering m the crops, curing, &c, £5. Total, £23 6s Gd. He calculates that from 10 to 13 cwt of the cured leaf (value one shilling perlb.) can be obtained to the acre. This gives a minimum return of £56 to the acre.
