Letters to the Editor

The Kditor is desirous of affording every reasonable facility for the discussion of public subjects; but it must b.i understood that he is in no way responsible for the opinions expressed by correspondent's. —As one having the ear of the public, you are qp doubt aware that a report has been put into'circulation to the effect that Judge Richmond treated the Sheriff'with marked coolness during the late sitting in Pieton. From the known impartiality and uprightness of Mr Justice Richmond, I do not believe such a thing is possible, but in any case I should like to be assured as to tho truth of the story, as Mr Eyes was acting in a public capacity. Perhaps as many of your readers were present in Court, and I was not, some of them will favour you with a line, to say whether they noticed such an unusual course of demeanor during the sitting of the Supreme Court. . My own opinion is that the report has been circulated iu order to aid in prejudicing the public mind against Mr Eyes by those who are seeking to injure him in other ways, ami but another specimen of their meanness.—l am, &c., Alpha.

CRICKET MATCH, WAIRAU VALLEY. To the. Editor of the Marlborough Express. Sm.—Please insert in your next issue the enclosed report of a return match played between the Cricket Clubs of North and South Wairan. On the 2Gth December, a return match was played between the North and South Cricket Clubs, which resulted in the defeat of the South Club, which match was played for a dinner and cricket ball, to be paid for by the losers. During the day—which by the way was a very hot one—the cricket ground was visited by many ladies and gentlemen. At live o’clock, our respected hostess, Mrs Whaynian, of the Wairan Valley Hotel, prepared an excellent dinner, to which both clubs and some of their friends sat down; and later in the evening the ball was well attended, many ladies and gentlemen coming from a great distance to attend it. Such a. display of beauty seldom if ever having attended a ball previous to this in the Valley. The only further remark we would wish to make, is as to the good bowling and the superior play of a few of the North Club, which, you, Mr Editor, can see from the enclosed report of the scores. Mr CL Bartlett was Captain of the North Bank Club, and Mr T. Drew Captain of South Bank. The following are the scores :
