CHRISTMAS TIME !

Someone lias said, “ The world’s my oyster;” and we may presume that he stood, knife in hand, ever ready to open and devour. There are a great many of the same genus Dando cosmopolitans, or uni versal oyster-eater, without the wit to express the. thought, but brimful of the requisite selfishness to carry out the principle. Not a man among us who has eaten bis, twenty-fifth Christmas dinner, but will testify to the truth of our assertion, and there are very few at even half that age who have not experienced it. To many indeed the world is but an oyster, and so long as they can secure the dainty bivalve they care but little who gets the shell and nothing else for their share. But numerous as the oyster-eaters are. it is pleasant to know that there are also nobler spirits and loving hearts, whose j hands, are ever ready in the righteous cause ; who are themselves so frse from guile that they accuse, not others who differ from them in matters of opinion, ot base and unworthy motives, of falsehood and hypocrisy. ft is indeed pleasant to know that the world is not all selfishness ; that Truth and Love like silver streams pursue their silent way beneath the dark hemlock shades of Envy, hatred, malice, and all uncharitablenessand to remember that in a toilsome journey through the vale of years we have reached fragrant green spots where those same silver streams have glistened with peculiar brightness. Such being the case we will not harbour cynical thoughts, although they will in very spite at times arise ; this cheerful season of the year shall not be marred by us with uncharitable thoughts or needless acrimony, and for the time at least we will try to swell the refrain of the song, “ Peace on earth, and goodwill towards men.” We have nearly completed the cycle of another year, the seventh volume of the Express will soon be in the hands of the binder, and in commencing the eighth we shall again enter upon certain improvements which will form a new era in our journalistic existence. The alterations of postage and the acquisition of improved machinery will enable us to present to our country as to our town subscribers two distinct papers every week;, and we intend, as far as practicable, to avail ourselves of the Post Office as a medium of circulation, hoping thereby to secure for our patrons a safe and punctual delivery, and also to prove ourselves worthy of their support by keeping pace in every possible way with the progressive spirit of the age. Thanking them for tire large amount of support hitherto awarded to us, we make our bow, most heartily wishing them all “ A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.”
