Wanganui is proclaimed as a Borough under the Municipal Corporations Act, 1867, from Ist-February. i John Symons, Esq., of Nelson, is appointed a Justice of the Peace ; and W. Whitehome, Esq., of Havelock, a Coroner for the Colony. A notice in the Gazette appoints his Honor A. P. Seymour, Esq., of Picton, a Governor of the Nelson College, and in connection with J. W. Bamicoat, Esq., to represent the Province of Marlborough in respect thereto. The West Coast Floods. —The following telegram was received by his Worship the Mayor on Monday last and sufficiently testifies to the calamitous nature of the Hoods which have visited the .West Coast during the past week j—“ A disastrous flood has occurred here, a large portion of the town swept away. Some hundreds of persons left houseless and destitute. Local efforts insufficient to relieve distress, your kind assistance is required, in obtaining contribution.— Edmund Wickes, Mayor.” His Worship has consequently called a meeting of the Borough Council, for Thursday evening to consider what course will be the best to adopt in order to comply with the request.

*** The Mails for England via America close at noon on Saturday next. The New Zealand Government Gazette of Saturday last, contains the appointment of H. D. Church, Esq., as Resident Magistrate and Deputy Registrar at Blenheim, and W. H, Eyes, Esq., as Sheriff of the district of Marlborough. We ax*e glad to learn that Captain Baldwin the Agent for the Government Life Assurance Schemes will pay Blenheim a visit about the cud of the current month, when he will deliver a lecture on the scheme, and Life Assurance and its advantages generally. Marlborough Volunteers.—The following persons are returned as having qualified to proceed to Canterbury in March next as Colonial Representatives :—Private Thomas Philpotts, Pxcton Volunteers; First stage, 200, 300 yards, 35 ; Second stage, 400, 500, 600 yards, 45, Private Wheton Soper, Spring Creek Yols. ; First stage, 200, 300 yards, 34; Second stage, 400, 500, 600 yards, 41. Private Edward Sutton, Spring Creek, Vols. ; First stage, 200, 300 yards, 34; Second stage, 400, 500, 600 yards, 40. The Nomination for the Representation of the Wairau in the House of Representatives took place to day at noon, when A, P. Seymour, Esq. was proposed by Mr C. Eyles, seconded by Mr C. Lucas ; and J. Ward, Esq., was proposed by Mr H. Dodson, seconded by Mr F. Busch. Both candidates addressed the meeting at length, after which a show of hands was taken, which resulted in 27 for Mr Seymour, 14 for Mr Ward. The report of the speeches will appear on Saturday. Both gentlemen invited all the electors fci go to the poll, a wish we venture to re-echo, as a very close contest may be looked for at the Poll on Monday next. Resident Magistrate’s Court. —On Monday last, before S. L. Muller, Esq., R.M.. the following cases were heard :—Menzies r. Alex. M’Lauchlan, a claim for £B.
