THE SUTHERLAND GOLD MINING CO.

The first Crushing commenced on Wednesday morning last, and it is expected that it will take about nine days to get through it. We regret that so many absurd, because baseless, rumours are put into circulation respecting this undertaking, some of which are calculated to produce a false impression. We take little notice of those which are current from mouth to mouth, but

when they get into print we feel it a duty to caution our readers, when as we believe, thy are detrimental to the public interests. This, an obscure print says—‘‘From private sources we believe that the crushing at the Sutherland reef is expected to be very rich.” This staflfc ment, if regarded as of any value, is calculated to unduly raise the hopes of those interested, aid to cause a feeling of disappointment should tiny not be realised, which would becloud the undertaking. The stone now being crushed is ihe whole of the lode taken out of the main drivefor a distance of about forty-six feet, and as the quantity by measurement would not comain above 45 tons, which it is estimated will be atout CO to 70 tons of stone, with which a considerable portion of slate is mixed. All the reports which have reached us, to which we can attach any value, lead to the belief that the stone will be payable, but we advise the shareholders r.ot to expect more. Even this is not yet proved, and can only be estimated approximately from the first crushing.
