PUSH ON THE RAILWAY!
(From the Express Telegram.) There is great encouragement to hope that the advent of better and more prosperous times is not far distant. The letter from Mr Yogel on the subject of cheap railways which was published last month in the Express , contained some very excellent suggestions for the consideration of the General Government, and in fact for all persons who may have any influence in directing the public works of this Colony. The tone of his Honor’s speech at the opening of the Council with reference to this important subject would lead us to suppose that Mr Vogel’s hints had made some Impression on his Honor’s mind, and the assurance from him that the Colonial Government have favorably entertained the project for constructing the line from Picton may reasonably Induce us to hope that this desirable work will not only be commenced at no very distant period, but that wise economy will be exercised in its construction. We most heartily agree with the Hon. the Colonial Treasurer in' his views as to the folly of expending large sums on ornamental buildings. Palatial stations and elaborate systems of gates and gate-keepers are certainly not required in the present condition of the Colony. The great and primary object of our railway system should be to secure for the public cheap, safe and expeditious means of transit for goods and passengers. Having once secured the useful, the ornamental will follow all in good time. The second and scarcely less important end to be kept in view is the opening up of the now remote districts, and the necessary impetus to trade and agriculture which must follow in the train. We did not mean to make a pun, but the line is written, and if our good wishes could be realised the train should come Express.
