BRYOONE QUEEN CARNIVAL. OYER £95 FOR SOLDIERS’ COMFORTS. The Bryclone branch of the War Funds Association has been making a big elfort to raise funds to send comforts to our boys at the front (writes our correspondent). A strong committee was appointed to make a house-to-house canvass, with the result that, every householder in the district gave either in cash or kind, and some both. To excite a little friendly rivalry six princesses were nominated, and subscribers were asked to put their money on any one they chose, the princess with the most money to her name at the brush to bo the Rrydoue cpieen. As a finale the branch held a social in the Coronation Hall on Wednesday, 22nd ult., when there was a very large attendance. The stage was packed with produce of all kinds- tor sale. At the outside entrance was erected a small pen containing a -sheep and a lamb for the purposes of guessing competitions. Mr George Stuart (chairman of the branch of the assoeia tion) presided and thanked those present for attending In such large numbers to help the cause. He regretted very much that news had been received that afternoon of the death of one of their district hoys, Private Donald Grieve, who had been killed in -action in France. A motion of svmpathy was passed with the bereaved family, the audience standing. Continuing, the chairman said he haQ much pleasure in opening the carnival, Mr das. Lament had charge of the floor, and splendid music for the dances was supplied by Ramsay s Band (Mataura). Between the dances the ladies accomplished excellent canvassing. At a suitable interval the produce v. r aS put up to auction by Mr B. Price (Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., Edendale) and brought good money, rnanv articles being sold several times over, . Messrs McPherson and Baird won the sheep with a guess oi 14.li}lb (actual weight), the lamb going to Mr E. E. Collins (Bryclone), who guessed the actual weight being 90.11b.
