Joseph Farley, captain of the steamer . Green Jacket, described a .street scramble for gold ivhen, nt Cardiff, Antonio d'e Costa and 'fhoma3 Orteago, two memberri of his crew, were ordered one month's hard la'bor for assaulting hiim in a street. "I had £l7O in notes and gold with me," said tlie skipper, "and when I wa r j attacked I swung the bag of money to defend myself, and out flew the gold in a shower. A mob scrambled' for the gold, all' of -which went exoent a sovereign handed to me by a policeman I lost about £76." : < 1 !
