FIRE AT GORE.

* A HOUSE BURN ED. After a period of nearly 10 months' rest the Gore Fire Brigade was called out at 2.45 o'clock this morning. The 'l'arm -was g ven from the Devon Street lire-alarm box, Ihe outbreak being in a bouse occupied by Mr A. K. liorley in Broughton Street owned by Mr J. A. Brown, dentist. The brigade was quickly oil the scene, and though there was no' hope of Raving the buildiig the firemen rendered good work in preventing the fire spreading to the adjoin'ng houses. A high westerly wind was blowing, which carried sparks a considerable distance Mr B.irlev, his wife and two children only had time to escape through the bedroom window in their night -attire. Mr Policy states that according to their practice the fire in the sittingroom grate had been covered with ashe-; prior to retiring for the n ( ight. He was awakened by his eldest child, who is suffering from whoop'ng-ceugli, and proceeding to the sitting-room to obtain some medicine was met with a burst of flame and smoke. The inmate; were only able to save the Iml-1 clothes and a portion of their clothing. The house, which was a very old one, being a portion of the old Goro courthmiro which was removed from Mersey Street- 14 years ago, was insured in the New Zealand Office for £3OO and Mr Barley's furniture -was insured in the London and Lancashre Office for £IOO. Mrs W. Kinc; Shore very kindly extended hospitality to the firemen.
