TIDING OVER THE WINTER.
♦ A WINDOW-SMASHER PUNISHED. PER UNITED PEERS ASSOCIATION. WELLINGTON, July 2. Last night, just before midnight, a man took up a position in front of a shop in Lambton Quay. ; He waited until a constable approached, and then he deliberately threw half a. brick at a big plate-glai-s window. There was a smash, and • the constable accosted the man, who had made no attempt to escape. When asked why lie had committed! the .act, he stated: "'Phis will get me a month, and - that will see me over the winter months." He was taken to the Lamibton Quay station, and appeared before Mr I). G. A. Cooper, 5.M.., at the Magistrate's Court this morning, charged with wilful damage to ,a window'valued: at £ Hi, the .property of Abraham Levy. He said, "I a.m guilty," when charged. "This was the deliberate act of a perfectly sober man," said Inspector Hendry. "The iliaii should ibo severely punished for doing such <a mean thing. The Act provides for a fine of £lO or three months ill i^anl." "Why did you do this?" allied: his Worship. "I must bo cranky," said accused from thi l Irox. His Worship: "I think ro." Accused : "So do I." His Worship: "Hi was a particularly mean, tiling, because you have put Mr Levy to a "heavy expense. You must be imnrisonedi for three months."
