Urn ATHLETICS. ' f LUMSDEN SPORTS. Under ideal weather conditions il>e Lumsden Caledonian Society held annual sports meeting on the Recreation Grounds yesterday. There was a good attendance and the special rraiiis from Gore-and Invercargili were well 1 patronised, 116 travelling oy the former and 266 by the latter. The gate receipts amounted to £22. The running events attracted large entries and tue handicapping of Mr Wallace Murd'>h (of Invercargili) was iest)onsible for some excellent finishes, -iiost of the : esults being won by small margins. The Lumsden Handicap provided some interesting racing, and the final was a great contest, there being only a yard between the four placed men a Horn winning by a few inches from Ritchie, who beat Earle by a small margin for second place. Keen competition was manifested in the piping and dancing events. In the juvenile .'section Miss May Thorn (Matanra), a pupil of Miss Stella Glennie (Invercargili) gave good exhibitions and defeated the Invercargili champion. Miss Flora McDonald, in the Highland fling. The arrangements for tie sports were well planned and carried out, and for this the energies of the obliging secretary (Mr S. E. Griffiths) and his hardworking committee were responsible, and no complaints were heard.
