COUNTY COUNCIL.

A meeting of the Southland County Council was held yesterday at Invercai - - gill, the following being present: Messrs H. J. Middleton (chairman), C. Robertson, £J. Kerse, T. Fraser, J. R. Hamilton, Arch. Stewart, D. Gilchrist, H. G. Brass and Jas. Fleming.

' CORRESPONDENCE. Terry and party (Waikaia) wrote asking the Council to endorse their application for a Government grant to enable them to tunnel a distance of 260 ft. in order to drain water away from their claim-, where it was known that good wash was located. It was resolved, "That the Mines Department be recommended to grant a sum if £SO towards the work."

Joseph Cooper (Wendon) wrote complaining that water lying on section 2, Block 11., Wendon 1 could not get away. It would be necessary to lay pipes across the road in two different places to let the water get'away. It was resolved, "That the engineer and surfaceman attend to the matter."

A. J. Cruickshanks and 29 others wrote complaining' of the state of the road from the Greenvale School and Leithen Bush. It was resolved, "That tho engineer and member for the riding visit the district and report." Thos. Teller and E. McLeod (MeNab) wrote drawing attention to. the state of tho road from MeNab to Otikerama from the end of the present gravel onwards for a distance of 70 chains, and asked that something be done to it. The writers are to be informed that there are no funds available.

Alex. McKay (chairman of the Wen>don School Committee) wrote asking for attention to a watercourse which ran through Section 18, Block VII., Wendon, at what is known as MeOutcheon's corner. It was resolved, "That the engineer report on the matter." ■ H. O. Turner wrote complaining of the state of the road near the Kaiwera Downs station, stating that it was difficult to get produce out from the farm or stores to it. The water would be prepared to do what was necessary if he were allowed remission of five years' rates. It was resolved to inform, him that there are no funds available this season for the proposed work. John E. Moßain (Edendole) wrote complaining of the state of the road near his property. It was resolved, "That the matter be attended to."

B. Grant (inspector of noxious weeds) wrote informing the Council that gorse was growing on property adjoining section 10, Block VIII., and Section 6, Block 17. He asked the Council to have the gorse cleared. It was resolved "That the engineer report on the matter."

P. M. Collett (East Gore) wrote stating that he was building a house, and asked that he be allowed to take 20 to 30 loads of soil for filling-up purposes from the east side of the road just beyond the borough boundary. The matter was referred- to the engineer with power to act. A. Perwick, jun., wrote drawing attention to the state of the road from St. Patrick's to the Balfour-Lumsden road. It was resolved to leave the matter in the hands of the member for the riding. John Evans (Balfour) wrote asking permission to clean grass out of the water-tables in order to take up a fall for a distance of 10 chains from where the water-table enters the Waimea Stream. The request was granted.

GENERAL. ,It was resolved, "That the Goro Borough Council be asked if it will agree to the railway crossing on the north end of the Domain at East Gore to be removed about six chains further east in order that the Waikaka Stream may be bridged at a suitable blace." It was resolved, "That applications for the position of surfaceman be invited for the Riversdale, Mandevillo and Otamete districts."
