1 he fortnightly meeting of the Mataura Borough Council held last night was attended by the Mayor (Mr John Low den) audi Councillors John Heslin H. Cameron, W. P. Thorn. C. Coombes' G. F. T. Gearing, T. G. Smith, J. H.' Park and W. B. Reid. CORRESPONDENCE. A. J. Service, elerk to Southland County Council, wrote acknowledging reoeipt of the Council's letter ing the Waimumu tail race and flood channel and also relative to the re- | construction of the bridge iand approach roads a.t Ivama Street. Con- ■ sideration of the latter matter had i l>een held over until next meeting of the Southland County Council. The letters were received. E. Jones, sanitary contractor, wrote agreeing to accept the Council's offer ■and conditions for the renewal of his contract under the present service The sanitary contractor asked for an increase in his bonus for the sanitary work until the drainage works wore completed. The request was referred to tho Works Committee. K. Jones wrote asking the Council to give him full charge of the gravel pit on the sewage farm. He also asked for a roadlin© to tlio pit, the Gcuiicii to allow him tho proceeds from the pit. Tho request was granted. Correspondence was received from Mr (J. J. Anderson, M.P., relative to the special loan from the Government in respect to flood damage. i H. I'\ Shepherd, A.Am., 1.E.E., consulting engineer to the borough, wrote forwarding Messrs Turn bull and Jones' accounts to date under the olectri;! light contract amounting to £92 8s 6d which ho certified to as correct and r; - commended to bo passtxl for payment. The letter was received and the account was passed for payment. B. 15. Couston, C.E., consulting engineer to the borough, wrote forwarding a schedule showing the streets over which rvermanont levols have been taken with their respective lengths illelude''! and not included in drainage reticui-ition. There was a length of seven and a-quarter miles at £l2 £S7. due on completion of permaiu-uu levels .v!aj:s. _ The letter was received, and the engineer was instructed ,+o place the plans before the next meeting of the Council. REPORTS. A lengthy report from tho town clerk regarding the engineers' accounts was adopted and the clerk was instructed 1 to pay "the amount duo to Mr Couston. The town clerk reported that tho electric light loan was now exhaust*".l. As several of the borough leases fall due very soon it would bo necessary to appoint an assessor on behalf of "tho borough. The renort was received and adopted, and tho clerk was appointed assessor •f the borough leases. The borough ranger reported having ' seized live cows on tho streets of. th'ej borough during the month. The surfaceman reported on his work during tho month. He also submitted tho cost of building a bridge over the Waikana stream at tho paper mills at £7 7s 9d. The town clerk was instructed to apply to the company for half cost. GENERAL. Th:. surfaceman was appointed inspector of the works to be carried out ai) the new bridge in Kana street. The town clerk was instructed not to re-let the corporation yard. An application for the river chainage and an application for filling was held over for the new Council to deal with. ACCOUNTS.
