I Through Lord Mersey's award i'or tho Northumberland Conciliation Hoard's district being retrospective there is a windfall of £20,000 in accumulated wages. 1 he newspapers report that there is a wave of indignant disapproval. Mr Strakcr (general secretary of the union) complains that the award does •ot grant the 5s which all the parties considered was a reasonable minimum. Tho president of the union considers i hat tho minimum is worth fighting for, as it means a considerable advance to many underpaid workers. Lord Mersey's award on the Northumberland Board fixed tho minimum rates underground as follows:—Day workers, 4s 9d; pieceworkers, 5s 8d; boys, 2s to 3s 6d, according to age; putters, 4s; deputies, hewers and en"inemon, 5s Gd. The hewers claimed Cs 3d and 7s 9d. WARNING TO STRIKERS. Received Mav 14. 9.30 a.m. SYDNEY. May 14.
