The Aborigines' Protection Society, asking Mr Flowers (Chief Secretary) to legislate to improve the conditions of the aborigines, made a startling allegation. A member of Parliament declared that the blacks' camps had drifted into breeding-camps for white children, i Many were so white that it would take l an expert to tell that they were not perfectly white. Native girls were the prey of half-caste youths and low-class white men. It was an unusual thing for one to reach the age of 16 without having a child. Their only prospect was prostitution for the girls and idleness'for the boys. The whole condition of affairs was a grave and a disgraceful •candal. 1 Other members of the deputation endorsed what had been said and urged) that the only hope was to remove children from the camps.
