Referring to the cablegram from Ottawa stating that numerous nuggets of gold wore found in fowls bred on a farm near Minitonas, an old Wellington resident states that where the Congregational Church now stands on Wellington Terrace there was a two-acre paddock with a small creek running through it, in the early 'seventies (says the 'Tost')- The occupier of the house on which a residence now stands kept some ducks and poultry, and on one of them being killed traces of gold were found in cleaning it. An old Californian and Australian digger, who was a friend of the then occupier of the property, immediately proceeded to sink a hole in digger fashion, but found no further traces of the precious metal. Old Wellingtnnians will remember that at Raker's Hill, near the tunnel on the Tvarori road, traces of gold were found, and for. a short period a couple of hundred men and boys tried their luck on "the diggings." but they were little more successful than the man who sunk a hole on Wellington terrace.
