The death is announced of Mrs Arthur Stannard, F.R.S.L., the well-known novelist (who wrote under the nom do guerre of "John Strange Winter"). Mrs Stannard was born at York in 1856, her father being a clergyman. 'Since April, 1874, when her first story appeared in print, Mrs Stannard has jlioen a prolific contributor to fietion- ■ using periodicals, chiefly stories of j Army life. She was referred to by RusI kin as "the author to whom we owe the [most finished and faithful rendering ever given of the character of the British soldier." Some of her productions are "Booties' Baby," "A Born Soldier," "Beautiful Jim," "He went for a Soldier," and very many other books. Her recreation was descril>ed as "the study of hair and skin culture," and she was proprietor of numerous toilet perparations.
