HON. T. MACKENZIE REPLIES. ELTHAM, October 31. Hon T. Mackenzie addressed a large' meeting at the Town Hall to-night. He dealt at length with his Candida-] ture for Egmont, justified his seeking the seat, and replied in detail to the principal criticisms of Mr Massey the previous evening, endeavoring to show them to be incorrect in some instances, and tTie position not fully stated in others, so that a wrong impression was conveyed. Mr Massey (he said) was a Rip Van Winkle, as his home protection proposals were already law, being passed 16 ago. Mr Mackenzie laid stress on the building up of agriculture andl closer settlement. He criticised the attitude of the Opposition regarding borrowing, showing that if the Opposition had its way the debt would be largely increased. He complained of damaging statements about the position of the country, also slanders about public men. . The Minister had an attentive hearin" and was accorded a vote of thanks. * E.
