A number of third-class passengers by the Manuka evaded the Customs and immigration authorities as 'Frisco and the captain and purser were called on to explain just before the vessel left again. The report was published that they were taken to gaol but this is denied. Ten stewards and two firemen deserted at 'Frisco, the former being tempted by an offer of €l2 per month on Alaska steamers
