We understand ■ that Chief Detective Marsack, of Auckland, has been promoted to sub-inspector. Mr Robert Troup has been appointed census enumerator for Southland, in place of Mr W. Russell, deceased. Sergeant Burrowes, who has been appointed to the charge of the Gore station, is expected to arrive by Monday night's express. The death is announced of the Earl of Cawdor, aged 64 years (.states a London Press Association cablegram). Deceased was First Lord of the Admiralty in tha Balfour Administration. The brilliancy prize offered by Hon. J. A. Millar in tho recent championship chess tourney at Timaru has awarded to Rev. C. E. Fox, who represented Norfolk Island (states a Wellington Press Association telegram). Mr J. K. Logan, who is retiring from the position of superintendent of electric lines, after 46 years in the service, received a presentation of a purse of sovereigns yesterday from the post and telegraph staffs throughout New Zealand. Sir Joseph Ward (Prime Minister and Postmaster-General) made the presentation, and spoke in eulogistic terms of Mr Logan's long and faithful service. Sir Joseph's remarks were seconded by Hon. Dr Findlay (Attor-ney-General) and Mr D. Robertson (Secretary to the Department). Mr J. J. Virgo, national secretary for Australasia of the Young Men's Christian Association, who recently visited lnvercargill, has been offered the post of central secretary at the new headquarters building in London. Mr Virgo has been 10 years or so general secretary of the Sydeney Association, and previously occupiod a similar position at Adelaide. Mr Virgo is acknowledged to be one of the best all-round leaders of men- in Australasia. He is a fine baritone singer and has won success as a soloist. He took a prominent part in the Torrey-Alexander missions and also in the Chapman mission in Melbourne and Sydney. He is a Mne platform speaker, and was chosen recently as the leader of the biggest evangelistic committee ever got together in Australasia. He is recognised as a great organiser. It is certainly a great compliment that an Australian-born should be selected as the secretary of one of the greatest religious organisations within the Empire.
