HANDLING FROZEN MEAT. PER UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION. CHRIST CHURCH, Jan. 26. As an outcome of Mr YY. D. Lysnar's address here yesterday on the conditions under which the Dominion's frozen meat is handled at London, the president (Mr O. F. Clothier) of the North Canterbury Provincial Executive of the Farmers' Union to-day forwarded the following cable replies to which are expected to-morrow : "Town Clerk, Guildhall, London.—At a large and influential pubiic meeting of producers held in Canterbury yesterday the meeting unanimously agreed to support tne request of the New Zealand committee to 3 r our corporation to improve Smitniieid upon all heads. Trust speedy action." DOMINION DEFENCE. THE NEW SCHEME. DUNEDNI, Jan. 26. Major-General Godley, Commandant of the Defence Forces, arrived here today and will remain till Saturday, when he will leave for Christehureh, where he will inspect troops and defence arrangements before returning to Wellington on Tuesday. In the course of an interview the Commandant was asked if there was any place in the new defence scheme for defence cadets. He replied that the matter was one which had yet to be fully discussed. In further conversation Major-General Godley said that boy scouts and senior cadets would not clash in any way. They were prepared to take Iboy scout units into senior cadets, but they muct be cadets first and scouts afterwards, and must go through the curriculum provided for cadets. With reference to training the Commandant said that the Territorial strength had been raised so much that when it was at full strength there would be only a comparatively small surplus over to be trained in the general training section. The Commandant's attention was drawn to a newspaper paragraph predicting a general post among officers commanding districts and others connected with the force, and he assured the reporter that no such changes were contemplated at present. With regard to the selection of men when registration is completed, Major-General Godley said that all up to 21 years would be taken. THE CONSOLIDATED FUND. RECEIPTS AND EXPENDITURE. WELLINGTON, Jan. 26. A statement of receipts and expenditure of the Consolidated Fund for the quarter ended December last is gazetted to-night as follows: RECEIPTS. DUNEDIN, Jan. 26. At a meeting of the Harbor Board today the following motion was carried, "That in the opinion of this Board the recent legislation bearing on the qualifications of members of local bodies has not been framed in the best interests of the community, and that the Mayor of Dunedin be asked to convene a meeting of delegates of the various local bodies in the province to be held in March to fully discuss the question and submit to Parliament such recommendations as may be deemed expedient." FOR SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH. AUCKLAND, Jan. 26. At to-day's meeting of the New Zealand Institute the Button medal in recognition of scientific work since December 31, 1906, was presented to Professor Benham for contributions to the zoology of New Zealand. THE FATE OF THE DUCO. NELSON, Jan. 25. A survey party at Grevillo Harbor, near D'Urvillo island, recently picked up a lifebuoy with the word "Duco" on it. The buoy is now being used on an oil launch in the locality.
