MEETINGS AND ENTERTAINMENTS

GORE SCHOOL " OLD BOYS." The annual banquet of the old boys of the Gore school was held in Mr Brice's rooms last evening, when there was a fair attendance. The function was a great success, which augurs well for future gatherings. The president (Mr J. Hargest) occupied the chair, and in his_ remarks mentioned that thess gatherings were a treat in several ways, the most important being that they brought the old boys closer together. The following toast-list was gone through:—"The King"; "Old Boys of the Gore School," proposed by Mr C. J. Burrows and responded to by several of those present; "Old School Girls," proposed by Mr Frank Coutts and responded to by Messrs T. Daly and W. Turnbull; "School Days," proposed by Mr Geo. Whittingham, and responded to by Messrs J. Whittingham and J. Jamie; "Teachers," proposed by Mr H. Beattie, and responded to by Mr Geo. Whittingham; "Absent School Mates," proposed by Mr R. Fraser, and rpsponded to by Mr T. Daly; "The Press,' proposed by Mr J. Whittingham. Oth >r toasts were "The Chairman" and "T.'jo Hose." Several of those present c;>utributjJ musml items. The singing of "Auid Lang Syne" brought a mosc j feasant evening to a close.

BALL AT KNAPDALE. The Knapdale Hall was the scene «f an enjoyable gathering last Wednesday, the occasion being the Knapdale Quadrille plain and fancy dress ball, "which despite the inclemency of the weather turned out a great success. About 50 couples were present, and a large number had availed themselves * f the opportunity of coming in fancy dress, especially the gentlemen. The prize for the best fancy-dressed gentleman, which was decided by a vote among the ladies, was won by Mr N. Maude, of Gore, as a nigger. Durmg the evening a sailor's hornpipe was danced by Sir Hellier and much appreciated. Splendid onusic was supplied by Miss Moffatt (piano) and Messrs John Cuddihy (violin) and T. Moffatt (accordion). Messrs M. Gerken and P. Mallon made very capable M's.C. GORE GIRLS' LITERARY CLUB. At the usual fortnightly meeting of the Gore Girls' Literary Club last evening Mr D. L. Poppelwell gave a very interesting lecture on "A Trip to the Mutton Bird Islands." Lantern slides depicting various beauty spots on Stewart Island and the adjacent islands where the mutton-birding industry Is pursued proved very attractive to the large number present. At the conclusion a hearty vote of appreciation was accorded Mr Poppelwell. Mr R. F-'sber very kindly gave his services in manipulating the lantern. CRIBBAGE MATCH. The return cribbage match Hokonui v. Central was played at Adams' tea rooms last night, Hokonui again proving the better team by 28 games to 25. The Hokonui players were captained by Mr S. H. Sprague and the Central players by Mr T. Thornton. At the conclusion of the match a social hour was spent. BELLE CROME BELLRINGERS. At the Dominion Hall on Friday and Saturday next the Belle Crome Bellringers will present their popular programmes. There are eight mem tiers of the company, headed by Miss Belle Crome, versatile instrumentalist and vocalist; with Mr J. J. Llewellyn, Welsh baritone; Miss Maud Jefferson, soprano soloist; and Mr Harry Fane, instrumentalist, vocalist, etc. Miss Crome and Mr Harry Fane will appear in a number of musical and vocal duets. Mr Hughes will produce a long list of comicalities, witticisms and humorisms. i The two Arnolds in their juggling speci- | ality are said to be extraordinarily | clever, and their turn is full of humorj ous and quaint surprises.
