A STEAMER WRECKED.
LOSS OF THE KIRKFIELD. CREW'S TRYING JOURNEY. BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH, COPYRIGHT. PER UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION. Received May 23, 9.30 a.m. SYDNEY, May 23. News has been received that the steamer Kirkfield, bound from Christmas Island (three degrees north of the line, discovered by Cook on Christmas Day, 1777) to Kobe (Japan) laden with phosphate, struck a shoal in the Palaway Passage. The crew strove for seven days to keep the vessel afloat, but she eventually sank. The crew reached Balabee in the boats after a trying journey 31 hours.
