NEW ZEALAND'S TARIFF. Received Julv 21, 11.15 a.m. MELBOURNE, July 21. In the Federal House of Representatives Mr Batchelor. as a nmttgr of urgency, called attention to the effect oil the wiue trade of tho South African and New Zealand tariffs. He urged t hat steps should be taken to place the Commonwealth on an equal footing with South Africa as regards imports into New Zealand. Mr Deakin (Prime Minister) said but for Mr Seddon's untimely death he had no doubt whatever but that a reciprocity treaty would have been ratified by the New Zealand Government. Whenever a single matter was brought up the New Zealand authorities stated that the time was not ripe for such si change. The Federal Government would make every effort to re-open the . question.
