A deputation representing the Wellington City Council waited on the Hon. liiin'.'s Carroll (.Acting Prime Minister) this morning to protest against tho proposal to issue an Ordcr-in-Council giving the Gas Company the right to take its main through the city boundaries to Miramar. Messrs Hit-lop and Aitken (ox-mayors) were present., and a strong protest was made, some very plain ■speaking being indulged in. The speakers declared that if the order were issued loeal government might as well end. and the Government would simply be placing itself in the position of taking the side of the company against the rights of the citizens. Eventually Mr Carroll promised the deputation to stay his hand for a "reasonable time" if ail attempt were made to settle the matter by arbitration.
