To-day J'rank JBaller applied to Mr Kettle, S.M., for an order against his wife, who did not appear. The applicant, a laborer, said he had a family of live, four of whom were in a home. He wanted a separation because his wife insulted him and constantly neglected the home—"Does she treat you with persistent cruelty '!" queried the Magistrate, quoting- the usual ground on such applications—"l think it is cruel, sir, to go home in the morning and find three men in the house." Bailer added that his wife swore ill him and ran\him into debt. A police sergent said the police had to keep Mrs Bailer's house under observation because it was suspected of being a house of ill-fame. lie had been called to interfere owing to quarrels several times—"Why don't you take steps to get a divorce asked the Magistrate. "That means capital," said Bailer, "and I haven't got it." As the Magistrate was uncertain whether the reasons brought forward by the applicant were sullicient to sustain the application he adjourned his decision. The Devon, which arrived from England to-day, brought 111 immigrants. They are a likely-looking lot. The majority paid the full passages only about twenty being' assisted by the Government. They include a down carpenters, eight farm laborers, eight laborers, nine navvies, nine miners, six plumbers, six bakers ; also carters, bricklayers, plasterers, grocers, weavers, clerks, and mechanics.
