ANNUAL SHOW. '1 ho (Hugo A. and I'. Society's show opened oil Thursday, when sheep, cattle, and pigs were judged, and implements were 011 view. awo or tlhree thunder showers fell dining the afternoon, but despite this the. attendance was larger than last year. ]n the sheep classes the entries'were the lowest for four years, owing to tile late spring, but the quality was above reproach. The championships wei'u awarded as follows : —Merinos, line combing rum, S. ltutherforil ; ewe, It. M. Tutnbull. Border Leicester rain, Little Bros. ; ewe, \V. Grey. English Leicestei ram, W. Nixon ; ewe, Little Bros. Lincoln ram and ewe, is.Z. and A.L. Co. Koinney Marsh raui, Bealey Bros. ; ewe, J. Fulton's trustees. In-bnd half-bred ram and ewe, J. SU'ing'fcllow. Cheviot and Shropshire Downs were poorly represented. There was a good show of fat stock in cattle. THiere was u falling off in Ihv entries, but the 135 shown were a good lot. Mitchell Bros.' Kouu Duke took the championship for sjioit horn bull, and A. Chamberlain's Keisey 11 for cow. Murray Roberts and Cy secured both championships in Foiled Angus, while in Ayrshire* Lees' .King Colo took the championship for bulls, and P. Ireland's Princess that for cowo. The entries of Alderncys and dairy cows were limited. The fat stock wua really prime. Heavy showers yesterday afternoon largely marred the pleasure of the visitors to the show. The rain came 011 just as most people were preparing to go to the grounds, but despite this the guto takings amounted to £SBO as compared witli £Ol3 last year) llie draught horses were a fine class. The championship fell to Likcn's Itaniuvly ! Vet for a horse, and to Gray and Sons' Nellie Gray, for a maro, '1 he resistance offered by the horses brought from the north by Mr Rutherford was not sufficient to really try the mettle of competitors in this display. The horsemanship and ;iti Rutherford's prize were divided between Carter, Sell, and W. Raymonu. The wood cutting competition was won by G. Hewlett (Southland) in Bmin 55see.
