CLUTHA COUNTY COUNCIL

At the meeting of the Ciutha County Council on Wednesday, the following business of district interest was transacted:— The District Engineer for Railways, Invercargill, wrote that there was considerable trespass along the railway line near Keiso since Aie footbridge over the I'oiuahaka erected, this being caused, so far as he could learn, by the action of the Council in permitting the public road to be blocked by some person. He asked that the proper access be opened, as he would regret to have to take proceedings ugainst trespassers. —Received, and "referred to the Tuapeka County, the road in question being within its bounds. The following dog tax collectors were appointed: Ulenkenich riding, A. M. Dackcrs; Foiuahaka riding, Thos. Paterson; Waipahi riding, A. M. Dackcrs. It was decided that all dog taxes be collected by February 20, collectorsvto be notified accordingly. Councillof;_ MXachlan moved, and L'ouncillosijßaunders seconded: "That tenders - b% cptll&I for 900 yards of metal in the Popotunoa Gorge, the same to be crushed with the crusher and spread on Clinton-Pomahaka Downs road; x cost of the same to be charged against Clinton and Popotunoa ridings in proportion to trallic thereon from each riding, as the Engineer may determine."—Councillor said the Government had voted £2OO for this road, l>ut had transferred it on the road' near a pet estate of theirs. The damage to the road in question was caused from traffic from Pomahaka riding, and a Minister of the Crown had promised him to vote another £2OO towards this road. Councillor M'Lachlan objected to I'omahaka paying so much, and offered £25. He subsequently agreed to give £SO as a compromise, and this was" eventually agreed to, on the motion of Councillors Mitchell and Nicol; the total amount to be expended being £IOO, about 450 yards of metal.
