SCHOOL EXAMINATIONS.

GORE SCHOOL. This school was examined on Nov*nto« 17th and 18th. The following is a copy of the Inspectors' report : —Compulsory Subjects.— Reading—Very good throughout. Composition—Good. Writing—Good in copy-books : exceedingly good in exercise-books. Spelling—Accurate in all classes. Recitation—Good. Arithmetic—Very good, except in Standard VI. Drawings-Good, except model-draw-ing of Standard VI. Singing— Good throughout ; notably so in Standard VI. Physical Instruction—Good, except in cases of girls of Standard VI. Geography—Good. History—Good. —Additional Subjects.— Nature Study and Elementary bciencc—Very good in infant department ; satisfactory in other classes. Handwork—Good in the classes in which it is taken. Needlework—Very good. Order, discipline and tone of sclio.i!— Very good. Infant Department (Miss Howes, mistress ; Miss Shepherd, pupil teacher) .—A pleasing tone pervades this department. The children are introduced to school work through the medium of natural and effective methods, and they perform their various collective exercises with no little precision and animation. Standard 1., with division of Class P. (Mr MaeKay, assistant teacher ; Mr Lyttle, pupil teacher).—Both classes do very satisfactory work, and the manners and conduct of the pupils are all that one could desire. Standard 11. (Miss McEwen, pupil teacher).—A wry good class, the pupils giving evidence G f thorough and conscientious training. Standard 111. (Miss Wilson, assistant teacher).—This class makes a very good appearance indeed. The pupils'| capacity for intelligent answering, their range of information and their ability to use their hands may be heartily commended. Conduct and manners are exceedingly good. Standard IV. (teacher for greater part of the year, Miss Christie).—Jn every respect a good class. The pupils are (bright and intelligent, 'and they do the various forms of written work with great neatness and care. Standards V. and VI. (Mr Grenfell, assistant master ; Miss MacGrbibon, temporary assistant).—Both classes are very strong in the English subjects. Standard V. does well in arithmetic also, Standard VI. not quite so well. Singing- is a notable feature, so also arc the exercise books some of which are exceedingly ornate. We are happy to note that a strong cadet company has been formed, olhcered by the members of the school stall, with Mr Grenfell as chief, and with members of the various classes as non-coms. After seeing the company on the field, we consider it a credit to the school and the town.
