WAIKAKA BBAXCH. A meeting of the Waikaka branch of the N.Z. Fanners' Union was held in the hall on the 19th inst., there being a good attendance of members. Mr J. Hodge (chairman) said it gave - him great pleasure to offer a hearty . 'welcome to their old friend, Mr Lawson, who had just returned from an " extended holiday to the United Kingdom. He was glad to see him home and looking so well.—Mr Lawson said he was happy to be back amongst old friends, and at next meeting he would endeavor to give them a few reminiscences of his trip. The Chairman _ moved "That this branch is of opinion that the itinerary of the veterinary surgeon should be in the hands of the district secretary at least one week before the month to which the Gxturcs refer.' 7 The secretary was instructed to bring .' the matter under the notice of the Provincial Executive. After some discussion on the Employers' Liability Act,-the secretary "" was instructed to procure a copy of the measure before next meeting. County by-law No. 4, re licenses for carrying sawn timjjcr, coal, flax, etc., was "discussed. Many members were of opinion that the only way to deal "" with this was to stop heavy traffic during the months of July and August in each year by putting on such a hnayy tax for those two months * that it would be almost prohibitive. There was no doubt, it was pointed out, it was the carting of heavy loads 1? during wet and snowy seasons that did ithe greatest damage to the roads, and which rendeied them almost imin the winter and early spring. It was resolved "That the secretary communicate with the Wai- | kaka Valley branch with a view to holding a public meeting at Maitlatid Village, at wMch dredgemasters, carters, farmers, and others interested coukl attend and- endeavor to arrive at a satisfactory solution of the Question." The present system of licensing carriers did not appear to give . general satisfaction to those present.
