(Notes by Stm-mak.) The Southland Racing Club netted a profit o£ £370 over their summer meeting. Their autumn meeting will be held on April. 1 and 2, at which £565 will be given in stakes. The Gore Racing Club's autumn meeting will be held on March 17 and 18, the flake money being £GOO, out of which the (lore Cup ii> worth 80s>>vs. Contrary to the uroal custom the club will race on Tuesday (St. Patrick's Day) and Wednesday. The charge against Mr Maoaspey, the secretary of the Forbury Park Racing Club, for inserting an advertisement allegedly inviting persons to bet at the late meeting of the club was dismissed by Mr Graham, S.M. The bookmaking evil is exerting the minds of those clubs who are in the unfortunate position of having to race on reserves. For two seasons the bookmakers have plied their calling unchecked on a number of courses in the south, with the result that the totalisator has suffered to suoh an extent that the olubp affected have an up-hill struggle to make both ends meet. In my notes last week I referred to the Tapanui course, and since then I have received word from the secretary, Mr W. Quin, that last year the speilers got on to the course owing to the laxity of Inspector Pardy and of the police. This year the club will make a final effort to keep off undesirables; failing that, will close down. Mr Quin also states that the Tapanui course is a leasehold, not a reserve. I trust Mr Quin will be successful in his efforts to cope with the evil. The Lake County Jockey Club, who were badly hit this season, are endeavoring to purchase a strip of land adjacent to the course, to which they propose to remove their buildings, and be in a position to exclude the bookmakers. Without legislation the outlook for some of the southern clubs is not too promising for next season. /

The Waikaia Hack Racing Club have issued a neat little programme for a meeting to be held on February 18th. Seven races are provided for, these being a hurdle race, four flat handicaps, and two trotting races, the total amount of added money being £35. All the races are open, and entries close with the Secretary (Mr W. Christie) on Saturday, 14th February, at 8 p.m. The Gore Trotting Club's annual meeting will be commenced to-morrow and concluded on Thursday. If the weather is fine the Club anticipate a large attendance, and patrons will witness the performances of the finest trotters ever seen in Southland. The handicapper has succeeded in satisfying the majority of the owners, and large fields will face the starter. Messrs Mason and Sons will work the totalisator, which will be run at £1 inside and 10s outside, dividends being paid on two horses where seven or more start. The Club has succeeded in getting excursion fares on the railways, and all out-going trains will be delayed, in addition to which a special will leave for the course at 1 p.m., arriving there in plenty of time to see the first race, and returning after the last race is run. The Club has decided to strictly enforce the rules of trotting, and riders are reminded that (hey are not allowed to communicate with any person when they are once in the starter's hands; they must also, at the conclusion of a race, parade before the judge. To try and seleot winners is a difficult task, but the following should run prominently;— District—Warrior, Phosbe. Publicans'—Lauderhill, Dandy. Cup, first heat—Bob B.T. Cup, second heat—Baxter. Selling—Seagull. President's—Redleaf, Rosingal.
