GORE BOROUGH COUNCIL.

Monday, January 19. The Council met at the usual hour. Present—the Mayor (Mr D. MeFarlane), Councillors Baker, Maeara, Poppelwell, Day, Simpson and Speden. The Clerk laid on the table a return showing the amounts of outstanding rates to be as follows:—190001, £7 Usfid; 1901-2, £2B 2s; 1903, £1289 Is Bd—Total, £1424 15s 2d. Outstanding rates, £175. Grand total, £1599 15s 2d.—lt was resolved that the outstanding rates for 1200-01 be sued for forthwith and that all other rates and rents not paid within fourteen days be sued for. E. R. Bowler applied on behalf of Mr Dryden, jun., for two and a halt chains of footpath past seotions S and 6, block VI, East Gore.—Works Committee to report. Geo. Hicks applied for permission toremove his offioe from Medway street to Ashton street, also to place a sign board over the footpath at his yard. He further applied tor a crossing into nis yard.—Hut to be removed on wheels; other applications granted. ' The Southland County Council intimated that permission to convey electric energy along the road from Mataura to Gore had been granted subject to the Engineer's approval.—Received..

W. 0. Burgess and four other ratepayers in Hamilton street, East Gore, protested against the proposal to fill in the ditch in that street unless the ditch were piped with 16 or 16 inch pipes, with storm traps at the necessary points.—Councillor Day said most of those who had signed the petition had asked to get the ditoh filled in and the water diverted past Hoffman's. The water had been diverted, and it was nonsense to ask that the ditch be left in its present condition. There was only one house affected. He moved that the petition be reoeived.—Seconded by Councillor Speden and oarried.

A. Turnbull, abattoir slaughterman, applied for permission to put on a boy instead of the present man as assistant, and drew attention to the state of the drain.—Writer to be informed that his oontraot is to do the work to satisfaction of the inspector. W. Sheehy'a complaint as to the State of Wentworth street was referred to the Works Committee with power to act. Mr B. Hay, engineer, telegraphed that the detailed plans of theeleotrio extension scheme would be forwarded during the current week. —Received.

The Mayor replied that as a result of an interview with the County Chairman the County Counoil had agreed to pay half the cost of cleaning Breughton street drain, and would put on four men at onoe.—Report reoeived; Council is of opinion that the ditoh should be lowered from the outlet to the railway crossing, and oleaned out for the remaining portion. D. McDougail asked the Council to attend to the oleaning out of the water table in Wentworth street and formation and gravelling of Oxford street.—Fresh tenders to be called for Oxford street.

The poundkeeper reported that the owner of a cow impounded by him had used abusive language to him in the execution of his duty. —Left in the bands of the Mayor to take legal proceedings if necessary. The Gore Fire Brigade asked that the ladder leading up to the fire bell, the trap doors in the sewers at Beattie's, Bank of New Zealand, and McGruer's corners, and reservoir outlet be repaired, and also applied for the usual annual subsidy of £25 to procure 300 feet of new hose.—Bequisition granted. The Works Committee recorded (1) That the District Bailway Engineer be informed that Stratford Street is already formed ; (2) That the offer of the Bailway Department of £45 be accepted on the understanding that the Department make the crossings as well as the oattle stops and fenoing; (3) That Mrs B. 0. Fergerson's request for an outlet in Oldham street be acceded to; (4) That nothing be done regarding Laurenson'a complaint in the meantime ; (5) That the Council decide as to what asphalting be done; (6) That repairs to the asphalt paths should be undertaken forthwith; and (7) That the Finance Committee apply to the Government under the Loans to Local Bodies Act for £6OOO to carry out drainage, saleyards repairs, and asphalting.—Beport adopted, Engineer to prepare specifications tor new asphalting ; clause 7 referred to the Finance Committee.

The Abattoirs Slaughterman repotted that during the month of December 49 head of cattle, 336 sheep, 77 lambs, and S pigs were slaughtered, and 3 sheep oondemned.— —Seoeived.

The Inspector was instructed to take proceedings against tradespeople placing obstructions on the footpath, and to give notice to ratepayers to eradicate noxious weeds. The Council then went into Committee to consider applications for the position of cadet in the Town Clerk's office, and on resuming reported that Master Edwin Day had been appointed. The Council thereafter adjourned.
