GORE BOROUGH COUNCIL.

Monday, May l'J. The Council met at the usual hour. Present— the Mayor (Mr D. McFarlane), Coun cillors Baker, Wallis, Macara, Poppelwell, Sherborne, Dsy, and Speden. Councillor Hunter was gianted a month's leave of absence on account of illness. A circular from the Minister of Health regarding the necessity of destroying rats was referred to the Sanitary Conimitee. Dr Ogston (district health oflicer) wrote bringing before the Council the advisability of ninking some provision for the reception and treatment of infectious diseases (in conjunction with some of the townships and rural district in the vicinity) in the way of a small hespitul either permanent or temporary for the aception of c;isjs of fever, diphtheria, and such iiku.—Councillor Day said they could demand a hospital, and by raising a certain amount of money a Government subsidy would bo received. He pointed out that the money received tor the Gore Cottage Hospital illicit be utili-rd in that direction. Ho moved that a committee consisting of the Mayor, Councillors Wallis, Maeara, Baker, Poppelwell and the mover be a committee to report at next meeting.—Seconded by Councillor Speden and carried. y The Chief Surveyor wrote stating *ff. section 85, block 10, that the section would have to be surveyed before it could be made a municipal reserve.—Council to pay cost of survey.

Messss A. and T. Burt quoted C 250 on trucks Dunedin for a 20 h.p. Buston and Procter boiler.—lteceived.

G. E. Wharton and four other ratepayers in Wigan street requested the Council to cause the electric light to be extended down Wigan street with as little delay as possible. —Referred to the Lighting Committee, petitioners to be asked how many lights would be taken.

It. B. Cameron complained of the disgraceful state of the footpath opposite his place in Eccles street, and asked that some gravel be spread.—Granted. Albert Hartley asked for a few loads of gravel in Oldham street to his workshop.— Granted.

Jas, Thorn asked for an outlet for the drain from his cow-byre at the corner of Bury and River streets.—Beferred to the Works Committee to report.

Mrs A. Lak.-man applied for some gravel on the fuotuath in front of her bouse in Stratford street, and also for drainage to connect with her seotion.—Gravel granted ; drainage provided in the general scheme. A. Beah applied for the position of veterinary inspector at the Gore abattoir.— Beeeived.

W. Henderson, on bohalf of T. G. Laurenson, drew attention to the state of the gutter in Main street, especially in front of the Criterion Hotel ; also to sundry holes in the footpath.—Left in the hands of the Mayor. It was resolved to set up the standing committees at.next meoting. The Abattoir Committee's report that A. Turnbull had been appointed slaughterman was adopted.

The whole question of the sanitary arrangements in the Borough was referred to the Sanitary Committee to report. Councillor Baker drew attention to the necessity for asphalting several crossings over Main street, and the matter was referred to the Works Committee to report. Councillor Baker asked if Mr Miller were manager of the electric light works or if the Council were. He thought the sooner they decided who was the responsible head at the works the better.—Councillor f'oppelwell said that when the standing committees were set up, the Lighting Committee (which was now the most important of all their committees) would direct the policy of the works, and the manager would be invested with his proper responsibilities. Councilor Wallis asked the Mayor when the electric light (promised three years ago) would be installed at the lire brigade station. He also pointed out that the bridge was now impassable owing to the mud being swept into the middle, instead of being cleared right away. When the Works Committee was reporling on crossings, the piece of road from Thomson's corner to the bridge should not be overlooked.—The Mayor promised that all the matters referred to would be looked into at one}. On the motion of Councillors Poppelwell and Day it was resolved that the Mayor call a public meeting to decide on the best form of celebrations in connection with the Coronation festivities. The Council thereafter adjourned.
