The prizes won in the Invercargill Easter bowling tournament by Messrs Jas. Smith and W. P. Craig (consisting of a silver cake dish and an oak brass-mounted coal scuttle) are on view in the window of Mr Craig's shop, Main street, Gore. The Wellington Education Board has decided to appoint no substitute teachers, and to close country schools whose teachers are laid aside by sickness, until' the department mukes proper provision for such cases. Ilenry Louis Grien, insurance canvasser, otherwise known to fame as "De liougemont," was sued for maintenance by bis wife at Parramatta, New South Wales, last week. Great distress was testified to. but as the plaintiff showed that he had no money, and pawned his possessions the case was dismissed. In liiddeford street, Wellington, on a recent afternoon, says the' Post,' a boy who was paralysed one side was going on (juietly on an errand when he was furiously attacked by a stranger, a lame man, who belabored him with a stick until forcibly restrained by the passei.s-by. Explanation being demanded, the assailant declared that he had beaten the lad for " mocking his limp." The boy is in very delicate health, and his inlirmity is evident to the most casual observer. Mr Georg; Moves, one of the recentlyelected members of the Waibi Borough Council, is (says the ' Auckland Observer ') stone blind. Sir Muyes is a member of several local bodies, including the Waibi school school committee, and is prominent in all movements connected with the government of the town. Some years ago he was a working miner, but a powder accident in the mine left him sightless, and i:lso iotiicied dreadful injuries on his head and body. He availed himself of the advantages of the Bliml Institute, and then entered into business for hiniieif as a storekeeper, with the results that he has maintained his wife and family comfortably, and worktd up a lucrative business. Peterson and Izitt, fishmongers, Gore, deny reports concerning the closing of their shop, and announce that ihey are still prepared to cater for the public in tirst-class style.
