SOCIAL AT BALFOUR.
A most successful social was held last night in the Balfour Public Hall, which had been most artistically decorated for the occasion. The object of the entertainment was to raise funds for the building of a new Anglican Church for the district. The first part of the programme was the auction of numerous and valuable gifts presented to the church by the residents in the district. This part of the evening's business was gratuitously carrieu out by Mr H. Hay, representing Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co., and excellent prices were obtained for the goods, consisting of produce of every description, poultry, fruit, drn]> ry. toy-, etc., etc. An excellent supper hail been providi d by the ladies of the church, and full justice was done to the contents of the tables. After that the concert took place. Mr Edwards had charge of the musical arrangements, and he is to be congratulated on securing such a line programme. The Chairman (Mr Thomson) called on the following ladies and gentlemen to supply their items : —Pianoforte duet, Misses Haydon and Barrett; song, " The Anchor's Weighed," Mr Tanner (encored); tableaux, " The Romany Lass " and "Do Noi Trust Him " ; duet, " Over Hills and Dale," Misses Walker; solo."I Dreamt thatl Dwelt," Miss Macpherson; cornet solo, " Scenes that are Brightest," Mr Patterson; Mr A. Hughes, " Little lirown Jug " and " Rheumatics " (encored); solo, "Pray for Me," Miss Ethel Haydon. After the concert a dance was held, and was largely attended, the music being supplied by MiEdwards (piano) and Mr Tregonnir g (violin). Uev. W. C. Wood thanked all the ladies and gentlemen for tbe kind belp that had been given towards the church, intimating that the sum of £SO odd would result from the work. The president and secretary (Mrs J. S. Thomson and Mrs Rogers) were untiring in their efforts towards making the evening a most pronounced success.
