MATAURA NEWS LETTER.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) The football match between the Mataura Star and Gove Albion was played to dt-.y (Wednesday), resulting in a win by three points for the visiting train. The winning side, though not conspicuous for its brilliancy, played a very fair game, some of the individual players showing out prominently, McKenzie, Latham, Frascr and I'edlow being woithy of mention. The match was tightly contested throughout, the local team havirg the best of it in the second spell. A. Chamberlain, Jack Carroll. 1». Carroll, D. liatton, and W. Shanks playid well for Mataura. The Mataura Cadets v, Excelsior Third match at Mutaura resulted in a win l.y 25 joints to nil for the latter team. This was match, but a lucre fcciamble, the Gure boys being far too heavy for the Cadets. The Murihiku Mounted Kitles l.all. was Ferrott's Ilall last flight, when there a large attendance, upwards of 75 couples taking part in the grand march, which was led off by Captain McNab. The .The dai.ee was very enjoyable, although the jhall was l&ther small for the large gathering. During the evening, Captain McNab, in a short speech, thanked those present for their aUtndaiice. This was ti.e iirst ball held by the division, and it had been attended with a large measure of success. Mr McNub mentioned that they could still take a few recruits into the company, although they had the maximum strength of 84, and at the next battalion encampment he anticipated beir.g able to put DO men under canvas. The supper, provided by the ladie?, was o£ unusual excellence. Messrs U. Allison and A. Cameron olliciated as M's.U. arid Mrs Godby and Mr Otto Kubener supplied the music. The thanks of the division are due to Trooper A. W. Mac Gibbon, to whose untiring energy and hard woik the ball owes much of its j^cess.
