MATAURA NEWS LETTER.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Mr Donald Cameron, farmer, of Waimumu, was thrown from his horse on Saturday when returning home from tbe township. Dr Donaldson was soon in attendance, and reports that no bones are broken, although Mr Cameron iB greatly bruised and severely shaken. It appears the horse shied at the train. Fortunately for Mr Cameron the accident was witnessed by a passenger, and immediately the train arrived at Mataura Constable Keaney was communicated with and was quickly on the spot. Yesterday (Monday), when Mr D. Kay's traction engine and mill were being shifted from one farm to another and were descending a rather steep hill, the wheels skidded and Mr Lindley, who was Bteering, was jammed between the engine and mill. Dr Matthews was summoned and found the man rather badly injured. He was taken to his home in Gore last evening. A meeting of the Mataura Cadets was held in the Band-room last evening, when it was decided to hold a hobby show in Perrott's Hall on Wednesday, 18th June, to raise f undß towards the payment of the uniforms. Mr W. W. King kindly consented to act as secretary. The following ladieß' committee waß appointed Misses Fowler, Carswell, Clark, MacKay, Macandrew, and Mac Gibbon. The show will be divided into two sections, viz., an exhibition of all kinds of works of art and an exhibition of collections of hobbies. Stalls will be provided for the sale of all kinds of articles, and quite a number of gifts are | already promised. The show will be instructive to the young people inasmuch as indicating what good use can be made of idle minutes. Works of art, such as paintings, will be exhibited from the first strokes of the brush the artist has attempted. A doll stall and shooting gallery will be available, and musical and other items will be' provided during the evening. Mr Pettigrew, who has been dredgemaster of the Waimumu Extended, has accepted a position on the West Coast as dredgemaster of the Victory. Mr Leister is now dredgemaster of the Extended. Mr Smaill, of the Extended, has been appointed dredgemaster of the Waimumu Queen in Mr E. C. Reid's place.
