DUNEDIN HORSE MARKETS.

Messrs Whight, Stei>hen6»n and Co. report as follows for the week ending 13th inst. :—

There was a fair muster of horses for this week's market, including about a score of draughts of useful stamp, and every one of these changed hands at splendid prices. The attendance of outside buyers was the largest we -have seen in the yards since our winter fair, amongst them being customers from the Lakes and Tapanui districts. The supply of draughts was quite unequal to the demand, and as many more as were forward could readily have ben sold at full rates. Of this week's entry of draughts only three were young, and these found buyers as follows : — Bay gelding, syrs old, by Prince Royal, at £38 10s; bay gelding, syrs. by Sir Robert, at £38 10s; and an unbroken 3-yr-old colt, by Heart of Oak, at £30. The other draughts were all aged, but some of them were good sorts, and in the absence of younger horses they were eagerly snapped up at from £20 to £30. A number of town carriers were present wanting first-class heavy shatters, not exceeding six years old, and consignments of this class and of useful farm mares and geldings can be placed just now to great advantage, and in any number. We can recommend our clients to send draught horses of all classes to this market just now. Spring-van and lorry horses continue scarce, and any coming forward would certainly meet with a good market. Hacks and buggy horses are dull of sale, and only some half-dozen changed hands at prices generally in favor of buyers. Breeders of Clydesdale and other stud horses are reminded that our 37th annual sale of stud horses takes place at Tahuna Park on September 29. Good young Clydesdale stallions are certain to be wanted, and preference will be given to fresh strains of blood. Attention is also directed to Mr J. R. Mackenzie's great clearing sale of high-class pedigiee Clydesdale horses at the Glenkenich homestead early next month. We quote: Superior draught geldings, young, £35 to £40 — extra good, a few pounds more ; superior young draught mares and fillies, £40 to £50 ; prize mares and fillies, £00 to £100; ordinary draught mares an geldings, £25 to £34 ; aged draught mares and geldings, £14 to £20 ; young carriage and cavalry horses, £20 to £30 ; well-matched carriage pairs, £50 to £80 ; strong spring-cart horses, young, £16 to £25 ; ordinary hacks and light harness horses, £8 to £14 ; weedy and aged hacks and harness horses, £2 to £5.
