THE L.S.D. OF PROHIBITION.
TO THE EDITOR. Sib, — If you did not choose to"accept the invitation of Mr Wallace to meet the High Priest of Prohibition on the platform on this £ s. d. question, you have at least given Mr W. as many figures and arguments as will' keep him quiet for a time. In his parting kick at my last short letter to the effect that if the Gore borough income is reduced rates must increase, and the tip I gave him as to how to put on his money on certain events, he discreetly evades the main points. He denies my statement that undei Prohibition business has decreased, and says the reverse is the result. There are none so blind as those who won't see, but if Mr Wallace was in trade himself he would see as I do. The only thing I wish to look at in Mr W.s letter is the hint about anonymous correspondence. People are seldom either " afraid or ashamed to sign their names " when necessary, but in a matter of this kind it may not always be expedient. Occasions arise when common prudence advises men to " go slow " in this respect. I prefer on public things to state my simple views and remain anonymous, and when Mr Wallace has time to consider his own position, he will be sure to agree with me that it would have been better for him to have copied my example. — I am, etc., A Ratepayer. TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — Since you have fallen to the level of the letter published, as written by a Tokonui Gorge correspondent, and inasmuch as I possess absolute evidence that no Tokonui Gorge correspondent wrote it, I decline to discuss the Prohibition or any other question in the columns of your paper. — I am, etc., A. H. Wallace. Gore, 13th November.
