MR GEORGE AT WAIKAKA.

Mr Jas. George addressed a large audience at Waikaka on Saturday. About 80 or 90 electors were present. Mr W. S. Howard was in the chair, and briefly introduced the candidate. Mr George said he would give unqualified sujjport to the present Government, except as regards the Banking Legislation, which he characterised as a huge blunder. In reply to Mr John Robertson, the candidate confessed total ignorance of the KelsoGore Railway. He was not aware that the line traversed a portion of the Wakatipu electorate. Thought railway freight should be as low as possible. Did not think the railways should be regarded as a revenue producing assets, but should be treated as other carriage-ways — simply as an additional inducement to the people to settle on the. laud. To Mr Eider : Did not approve of cutting portions off one electorate to join to another with no interests in common. Thought the way in which boundaries were in some cases fixed wai a perfect farce. To Mr Howard : Would favor borrowing to complete authorised works to a point of usefulness. To Mr Elder : The Government had not already spent most of the proposed loan. To Mr Cruickshank : .Did not approve of giving pensions to all men over 60 merely on a residential title, as such a thing would entice the old m_ from all parts of the world to New Zealand. To Mr Mcintosh: The old age pension would to a great extent do away with benevolent institutions. To an elector : Would make the men keep the women. On the motion of Mr Robertson, seconded by Mr Mcintosh, the candidate was accorded a vote of thanks.
