Gore Congregational Church.

WELCOME TO REV. A. H. WALLACE A social for the purpose of welcoming the Rsv. A. H. W.llaoe to the charge of the Gore Congregational Church was held on Wednesday night, and attended by fully JSO person. Mr L, Coutts occupied the chair, and after having given a short address called upon the choir to give the anthem " Hail Lovely Spring." In his speech Mr Wilkinson referred to the great progress made by the Congregational body in Gore. He remembered the time when they met in a hall, and now th»y had a Bplendid church of their own. He congratulated them upon having secured the services of bo able a man as Mr Wallace. Addresses were also given by the Revs. Bradbury and Saunders (Dunedin). During f.he interval between the speeches, refreshments were handed round and much appreciated by those present. Tho Rev. Mr Wallace thanked all the friends for their kind expressions of friendship. His wifa and himself would do thoir very best for the church and tha town. He was very sorry there were no representatives from other churches present. Mr Tinsley h^d sent him a most kind note of apology for his absence, but Mr Asher was unfortunately away from home at the time. Ho (the apeiker) would endeavor to work with hia brother ministers in the town for the common good of the place, if they were willing to extend to him their sympathy, and po-opei'ate with hi|j}. He thanked them for tho kindly way in which they had received himself and his wife. They had come here as strangers, and bad baen entertained aa frieeds. The rev. gentleman went on to denounce in the strongest possible terms the gambling cvil — out of 4G permits under the "Gaming and Lotteries Act" issued to religious bodies last year, two came to Gore. At the conclusion of his speech, the rev. gentleman was warmly applauded. During the evening vocal selections were rendered by the choir, Mrs Buchanan, Messrs Doiig.las. MoNee, Buchanan and Marks, and a recitation By Mr'Wilkinßon. Votes of thanks jvere accorded to the ladies, the visitors, and the yocaljsta, and the meeting terminated in the usual man.' ner.
